Elisabeth St-Gelais and the Orchestre de l’Agora
At the heart of this recording is Le Récital des anges, a work featuring Innu soprano Elisabeth St-Gelais. It originates in an intimate yet universal gesture: a woman wanders through the streets of Montreal at night, haunted by the memory of her sister Lucille, their shared childhood, and her death. Drawing on poems by Émile Nelligan, a major figure in Quebec literature, Ian Cusson traces a contemplative journey through the experience of dreams, moving between nightmare, memory, and wandering. It is a work that places loss at the very heart of its musical expression.
This creation enters into dialogue with Schubert lieder orchestrated by Ian Cusson himself, performed by mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska. Among them is Erlkönig, heard in Berlioz’s French version, a choice that firmly anchors the program in both German-speaking and French-speaking cultures and highlights the distinctive artistic approach of the Orchestre de l’Agora.
