Biography
Named Artistic Director of the Year at the 2020-2021 Opus Awards, Julien Proulx has been at the helm of the Drummondville Symphony Orchestra since 2014. Known for his bold and refined programming, he has revitalized the musical life of his community. A generous and imaginative musician, he did not hesitate to think outside the box during the pandemic to find new musical avenues to explore, creating refreshing digital projects and presenting extraordinary concert events. By turning constraints into opportunities, he found a way to reach his audience while encouraging musicians to express their creativity. With the OSD, he won the Opus Awards – Regions in 2020 for the Prince and Tsar concert and in 2018 for the Bel Canto concert, two events that showcased the voice. A trained cellist and singer, he is also a renowned choir conductor, which frequently leads him to conduct symphonic repertoire for choir. Julien Proulx was conductor-in-residence with the I Musici de Montréal Chamber Orchestra under the tutelage of Yuli Turovsky and conducts as a guest conductor throughout Canada, notably with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Orchestre Métropolitain, Les Violons du Roy, the Orchestre du Festival international de Lanaudière, and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Whether teaching privately or in his role as artistic director, he is always happy to mentor emerging conductors and musicians and to share his passion for music with audiences.
After a resounding success in 2024–25, the Agora returns to the moving world of Émile Proulx-Cloutier, in an orchestral version of his songs. Blending theatre, poetry, and grand music, this concert playfully explores the connections between music and literature, with the collaboration of 90 choristers from the Petits Chanteurs du Mont-Royal, the Burning BRASs Band, and the Orchestre de l’Agora, led by guest conductor Julien Proulx.
