Folk and Classical Interwoven
From Brahms’ beloved Hungarian Dances to Bartók’s Rhapsodies, classical composers have always had a fascination with folk music. The works in this program all reflect this fascination in their own way. Some are direct transcriptions of folk tunes, such as the Danish String Quartet’s Sekstur from Vendsyssel/Peat Dance and Wu Man’s Silk and Bamboo. Others are original compositions that recall certain folk music techniques, like Inuit throat singing in Marcus Goddard’s Allaqi.

The program culminates with a staple of the chamber music repertoire, Antonin Dvořák’s String Quintet no.2 in G major, op.77 (B.48). Dvořák’s work were heavily influenced by folk music.
